Most amazing thing I've ever seen. Holy cow that opening ceremony was fucking fantastic. Every time I thought they couldn't top something, they did. Wow. The printing blocks to great wall to flowers to people? Holy cow. Mindblowingly amazing show.

Drinking game for the parade of nations: Every time the Scottish bagpipes play (7 so far), take a drink. Every time the athelete focused on is competing in judo, take a drink.

Fairly interesting political display, with the giant Chinese cheers for the US, North Korea, Switzerland, Germany and Iraq. Putin talking with Bush, probably about Georgia, before the parade...

Poor hot Chinese dancers with their little drink bottles, dancing in high heels all night through the parade.

As usual, some really awesome outfits and some really horrible ones. Bagpipes number eight, btw.

Srsly, I just want to see that intro again.

They seemed so excited and energetic when China came out, I was amazed they found that second wind. Though it was also probably a "holy shit, we're almost free!!" moment for them.

There was also random Mexican music from time to time as well. The musical selection seemed pretty random. I imagine it would have been tough to come up with two hundred and four different musical clips for each country and still have them flow together, but WTF with the bagpipes?

% of Scottish athletes - low
% of Scottish music during march of athletes - high

But bagpipes always sound pretty awesome during a march, no matter what culture is marching, so I'm cool with that. Screw you, Tuvalu, you're marching to bagpipes!

Sydney was better.

That is all.

As awesome as those were, I think Zhang Yimou kicked everyone's ass. I mean, c'mon. The countdown? The movable type blocks? The layers of symbolism and beauty and perfection? Ung.

At least they recapped the countries that came out during the breaks this time. Though you would think, with it already being pre-recorded, they could just not skip anything due to commercials, eh?

I could practically hear half of Schenectady bitching after they showed Guyana for all of two seconds.

- Printing blocks FTW, but that whole thing was nuts. I'm so glad I stayed up for the whole thing, and I'm usually kind of over the dramatic crap after twenty minutes. Sydney I remember only because there was a nine-year-old blonde girl "dreaming" the whole ceremony, and nemo_wistar and I were on IM yelling things like "WAKE UP ALREADY, YOU NARCOLEPTIC BITCH!"
