Ash Wednesday Sniper
Despite what you may read here, I have nothing against Catholics. I went to a Catholic high school, have Catholic best friends, and have had a number of positive experiences with the church. I would never do or consider doing the following.

Every Ash Wednesday, I get the idea of a Catholic-hating sniper striking every year, putting bullets through the blessed foreheads. I don't know why. Hordes of screaming masses, bodies outside of cathedrals. People wearing silly hats on the streets to avoid becoming targets. Other Christian branches trying to gain converts. The sniper evading the police year after year, vanishing off the map. Why can't I shake this idea?

Like many people, I forgot about the settlement until my $13.86 arrived yesterday.

Feeling: restless restless

I forgot about Ash Wednesday, so when some old lady answered her door with that telltale black spot, I momentarily thought she was paying homage to Wesley Willis.

That would be a great tribute, every August 21st, fans wearing fake ash bruises on their heads.

Write a script. Sounds like an interesting film.

Many details not quite fleshed out, though...

There's a few things that need fleshing out.

  • Location, location, location
    • Needs a large Catholic population
    • Would be best if the sniper hit a different city/town/village every year
    • My Catholic roomie recommends Hoboken, I think NYC could be a good final year where he gets caught
    • Hitting a few smaller towns with poorly equipped police forces would be a good way to ramp things up, and terrorize the populace, as hitting Anytown, USA is quite scary
    • Hard to work in a protagonist, unless they often end up at locales after the sniper has struck
    • Could also stick with the same town or geographical region year after year, but I don't like that option as much
  • Motive
    • Want to stay away from the easy ``molested by a priest on Ash Wednesday'' route
    • My Catholic roomie suggests a WASP bred to take out Catholics, in some Kennedy conspiracy type way, but that's overdone
    • Could be topical and work in a homosexuality angle, but that would be harder to sell than Basic Instinct
    • Maybe a crazed Catholic who thinks he's the angel of judgment (Gabriel for OT, Michael for NT)
    • Perhaps a totally inflammatory script with the sniper being the widow(er) of a murdered abortion doctor
  • Style
    • Could go for a Summer of Sam feel, where we focus on a Catholic or group of Catholics as the events unfold, giving the sniper less time, until finally everything comes together for the finale
    • Natural Born Killers over the top comical style, sensationalized to the max, following the sniper on their quest, portraying them as a Leonard Cohen-esque antihero.
    • Perhaps like Taxi Driver, giving the audience a gritty painful window into the sniper's soul, watching them fall apart, joining them on the decent
    • Psychological drama like The Three, where the clichéd police officer and the sniper turn out to be the same person

Many Catholics are like that. They pay their dues for a while, then go their own way. It's quite common.

Kingfox is an act of terror waiting to happen. Never time don't post it here before you flip out though psycho, next year we'll all know it's you unless you kill us first.

But it's not me, it's just some random person reading my journal and getting the idea. Right?

you realize Ash Wednesday Sniper would make a GREAT video game, right?
kingfox From: kingfox Date: February 27th, 2004 08:08 am (UTC) (Hard link)

I like that idea...

Then Fear Factory can create a killer (no pun intended) title track for the game that's better than the game itself, like they did for Messiah.

I liked Messiah!

well, okay, it was a huge disappointment. and maybe a little too much paltform jumping. and the ending sucked.

yeah, I concede your point. we should make that game happen.
