Halloween part 2 recap
Last weekend the Halloween festivities continued. But first, on Friday, was jedimentat's former roommate's birthday at Stuff Yer Face down in New Brunswick. I hadn't been there in nearly a decade, or to any establishments in the town itself since going there with petemagyar and fmrflyboy right before the place built out of Cafe Newz burned down.

mercurtio247, pyratking, angryjonny, rainbowjingles, graegis, sir_agravaine, and those who lack journals were in attendance. Somehow, over the course of the evening, I got talked into turning my back on eleven years of shunning TMT. *shudder* After dinner we wandered around town for a bit, seeing all that had changed since I last really spent time there. I practically lived there through high school and right after college, yet hadn't been back in far too long.

Saturday evening was darkhand and whymercy's Halloween party, which had a Gilligan's Island theme. jedimentat and I had discussed dressing as Dharma Initiative employees to go with the television island theme, but ended up just dressing up as tourists from the second movie when it was turned into a resort island. It was chilly, so we ended up looking like flashers between parties. I also managed to help her wear her contacts for the first time since she got them, then taking plenty of Melange themed photos of her eyes.

First we went to palingyuan and oidhche's housewarming Halloween party. Also there were mrfantasy, kikibird, runstaverun, daeron, caniswolfie, amy_pearlman, their families, and others. The hosts had a great bounty prepared for us, and it was good to see their new place.

We then made it to the aforementioned three hour cruise, which was also enjoyable. We went from a party hosted by a couple that played WoW to a party hosted by a couple that had played WoW. In both cases, the wife was a hunter. Some entertaining costumes and conversation there, and it was great to meet the hosts after hearing all about them. We ended up bailing on the other parties we discussed visiting if we found ourselves feeling particularly ambitious.

Sunday I did lawn work for the first time in ages, and had to endure both the mockery of being called a city boy and being dressed up in Rutgers attire. After raking up her front lawn, I picked up some food, and we whipped up a quick meal.

I managed to chew through a ton of BSG, she pushed through a pile of work, and we had the Afghani dumplings I had been craving all day. Mmmmm.

Rest of the weekend's photos have been added to the Halloween set on Flickr.

Boo for the stem cell vote not going through.

Starting the weekend early. Gone fishin'. Or just taking days off, exploring the city, and trying to catch up on BSG before Razor. Whatever.

Speaking of getting caught up on shows, as of Tuesday night I am now finally up to speed on that LOST show people were telling me to watch for years. I can no longer get spoiled by teh intarwebs or people. It's great to finally be able to discuss it with people without having to cut them off or preface any discussions with a warning of where I am.

Current Location: Hoboken, NJ
Feeling: tired tired
Listening to: BSG season 2, the abortion episode

not a bad thing

You can not borrow your way out of Debt!
I had to vote 'no' on the stem cell question.
While I do hold out the hope that one day one one of the several dozen countries who have been researching with this science will have a break-through, the funding for the 4 centers was in my opinion unsound and I could not approve it.
all announcements from Trenton keep repeating the same points about how massively in debt NJ is and the desparate financial measures being taken:
$34 billion budget, and we expect a $3.5B shortfall this year. We need $37.5B/annualy to run a state?
the Turnpike is being sold off cause we need $$ madly
Public structures are up for Name Rental cause we need $$ madly
Sales Tax is going up a second time in 2 years cause we need $$ madly
Property tax has increased, and will again soon cause we need $$ madly
There is serious talk from trenton about the need for a $0.30 to $0.50 gas tax hike cause we need $$ madly.
NOW...instead of spending the original $100mil on the one research center at Rutgers, there would have been 4 made in 3 other cities for $450mil.
No Venture Capatalists are forking over $$ for this science, nor are Major Pharma companies forking over the $$ (in the US at least. Novo has centers in the EU). If even experts in the fields of BioScience and Revenue are unwilling to plunge that kind of $$ for NJ to help them in this field, why is a Gvt. in massive debit doing it?
The wording of the proposal said that if NJ can not pay off the loan (unspecified criteria), then additional taxes would be levied against real and personal property. A lot of taxes (see above) are already being raised. Since Trenton has already said repeatedly that NJ is worse than broke, it would be financially irresponsible to borrow yet more in the hopes that one day there may be ROI in a field that has yet to produce what it promised.
When I see spending cuts and a decent proposal for cost reduction - not fluxuating rebate checks handing me back some of my own money - then I would be more willing to shell out a bit extra for a possible breakthrough in this science. When we need only $20 billion a year to operate this State, I will sleep better at night. When Urban housing, Transit and Schools are improved I will have the faith to invest in gambles. Let's fix what we have and not keep buying new.

Awesome, thanks. Some great shots there.

Was great meeting you both, we'll all have to do dinner sometime soon.
